About Turnberry
The village of Turnberry in South Ayrshire is now world famous due to the Turnberry Resort and golf course. The course, which was built in 1904, includes two championship courses and the Colin Montgomerie Links Golf Academy, which brings golf enthusiasts from all over the world.
However, Turnberry has an interesting history dating well before the resort. On the coast is Turnberry Lighthouse, built in 1873 and the ruins of Turnberry Castle, thought to be the birthplace of Robert the Bruce in 1274. From here, you can look out and see great views of Ailsa Craig.

There was a memorial to The Royal Flying Corps Memorial erected in 1923. This was designed by Hugh Wallace and dedicated in memory of the air crews who trained here during the First World War when the golf courses were turned into a grass airfield. The recently built hotel was used as the officers' mess.
